HFGK In Somaliland

Maternal mortality rates in countries worldwide were ranked in The Lancet (October 2007) in groups from A-H. The UK sits in Group A whilst Somalia/Somaliland sits in Group H alongside Liberia and
Sierra Leone (the highest in the world).

Cardiff, like several other big cities in the UK has a significant Somaliland community of about 6000 citizens, who work hard to support their familes and communites back home. There are regular visits to Cardiff by Government Ministers from Somaliland and the involvement with HFGK has already been warmly welcomed by the Deputy Health Minister who visited in October 2008.

A visit by HFGK Chair Angela Gorman was planned for November 2008, but sadly a serious security incident occurred in late October, necessitating the cancellation of the visit. HFGK sought advice from the Royal College of Obstetricans & Gynaecologists who undertake training of medical staff. We were told that the staff know how to administer the drugs, they just don't have them available! It was subsequently decided to send the Magnesium Sulphate and Misoprostol with the first shipment arriving just after Christmas. We have first hand reports that the medicines have already saved lives. There will soon be a report on how an eclamptic woman, the sister of a man in Bristol was saved within a few days of the drugs arrival.
