Raising Awareness

In 2000, the UN set tough Goals to be achieved by 2015. One of those Goals is Number 5, that of reducing maternal mortality by 75%. A high level meeting was held in New York on 25th September which was convened to review the progress towards achieving the Goals. MDG Number 5 is the only one on which there has been no progress.

One of the roles of our Trustees and in particular our Chair in her seconded role is to use every opportunity to bring this tragic situation to the attention of the public. Before seeing the 2005 PANORAMA episode Dead Mums Don't Cry, it is debatable whether any of our team were fully aware of this human tragedy ...

If you think you may be able to help, with either awareness raising or fund raising, please contact any of our team. We will be pleased to send you our leaflets and if possible, arrange to come and speak to any local groups (big or small), about our work. This includes schools, universities, and church based groups. We in HFGK can assure you that the direct link with the hospitals in the countries we are able to support, means that the donations are put to immediate use and the outcomes visible. Seeing a woman who would otherwise have died, recover from eclampsia and return to her family because of our efforts is amongst one of the most amazing feelings possible. We can only do that with your help.

Charities Advisory Trust

In September, HFGK received a substantial donation from the Charities Advisory Trust through their Good Gifts scheme which "offers a range of presents for every occasion" and in the developing world "give long term benefits-by restoring sight to a blind person, by giving livestock that through offspring keep building wealth or by giving a chance to go to school."

Income from the Good Gifts is recycled back into other charities including HFGK, so purchases not only give the donor and recipient the satisfaction of knowing that they have made a difference to the lives of other human beings, but the profits extend beyond the individual gift. It's a fantastic arrangement and one which is now going to save many lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Good Gifts website is www.goodgifts.org

The London Quilters

In May 2008, HFGK was chosen by the London Quilters as one of two charities to benefit from raffling a magnificent quilt. The draw took place on 12th October at Alexandra Palace and the lucky winner was Sarah-Jane Watkins from South Wales. The other very deserving charity was The North London Hospice. Ticket sales brought a total of approximately £3000, meaning that HFGK will receive £1500. We cannot find the words to express our gratitude to those who made the quilt and those who sold tickets. info@londonquilters.org.uk
