| The
Welsh Assembly Governments
Involvement |
|
|
In 2006, the Welsh Assembly
Government, directed by
the First Minister Rhodri
Morgan took the initiative
in formalising a number
of already well established
NHS Links with partners
in Sub-Saharan Africa.
To date there are over
20 Links which allow exchanges
and support to hospitals
and health centres with
the aim of contributing
to the achievement of
the UN Millennium Development
Goals.
|
Hope for Grace Kodindo
is one of those 20 links
with funds awarded to
assist with visits an
dtraining of midwifery
staff in our partner countries
of Chad and Liberia. HFGK
Chair Angela Gorman is
part of the Links Group
Committee, assisting with
organising the annual
Links Conference. In January
2007, the NHS Continuing
Professional Development
Policy instructs all NHS
Trusts to release staff
in order to undertake
visits to Sub-Saharan
Africa. Paid time off
is given as study leave
in the same way as local
study leave is allocated.
The purpose is to broaden
the experience of NHS
staff, learning to cope
in a resource poor environment
i.e. to become more aware
of precious resources,
to refresh basic skills
and to share experiences
with staff in the developing
world so that they return
to the NHS with a renewed
appreciation of what is
offered within Wales. |
